Schwem's was founded in 1944 by Earl and Anna Schwem. He had managed the local Kresge store for many years, and together they dreamed of operating their own business in downtown Port Huron. From 1944 to 1975, Earl and Anna ran Schwem’s along with many family members. They offered a variety of customized products and were nicknamed "The Candy Store" by many locals, due to the many sweets sold at their counter. The store was known for the smells of rubber stamps being made and fresh-popped popcorn drifting from its doors.

In 1975, the ownership of Schwem’s was passed down to Earl and Anna's grandson, Mark Prochazka, and his wife, Rita. For 45 years, Mark and Rita ran the business with expertise, hard work, and faith. During that time, a new building replaced the old, and the staple products of engraving, trophies, and rubber stamps solidified into what Schwem's is today.

In 2020, Schwem's Rubber Stamp & Trophy was proudly passed down to Mark and Rita's daughter, Erica Corbat, and her husband, Russell. Together, they are writing the next chapter in the family-owned and operated business that has proudly remained in Port Huron, MI, at its original address.

1975

In December 1971, the Smithsonian Museum reached out to Earl Schwem to arrange acquiring the Butter Kist Popcorn Machine manufactured in 1916, one of the very few made. It had been used at Schwem’s Rubber Stamp & Trophy for many years, to showcase in the institutes exhibit of Early Electronic Inventions in Washington, D.C. The unique and beloved popcorn machine is a part of the exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute.

“Picture all the action with colored lights and you’ve got an entertaining process that made the best popcorn in town!” claims Mr. Schwem.
